The Earth's biodiversity—the rich variety of life on our planet—is threatened by human activity and disappearing at an alarming rate.  But what is not widely appreciated is that our health and our lives depend on biodiversity—for human medicines, protection against the emergence and spread of infectious diseases, food production, and much more.  This briefing is in preparation for a resolution that will be introduced this week to express the sense of the Senate that the United States should take a leadership role in protecting biodiversity.

The program will include:

Biodiversity: An Overview
Edward O. Wilson Ph.D., University Research Professor Emeritus, Harvard University

Biodiversity and Human Health
Eric Chivian M.D., Director, Center for Health and Global Environment, Harvard Medical School; Shared the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize for co-founding International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War
