Programs

At the heart of the Center’s programs are its efforts to present the best and most current science about the environment and human health in non-technical language that is easy to understand. To this end, the Center has developed a suite of programs for policy-makers, physicians, scientists, students, and the general public.

Medical and Secondary Education

From 1997 through 2007, the Center has taught a semester-long course at HMS entitled Human Health and Global Environmental Change which is open to all students at Harvard University, MIT, and the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts, as well as to members of the public. The course has been disseminated via CD-ROM and the web to students at 65 medical schools, colleges, and universities in the U.S. and abroad, and to hundreds of individuals around the world free of charge. We estimate that approximately 1300 people have taken part or all of the course through the years it has been taught. In addition, the Center has adapted the course for use in secondary school settings.

Policy-Maker Education

The Center's policy-maker education program strives to inform domestic policy decision-making by educating offices and committees in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives about the potential health impacts associated with environmental change.

Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity

The goal of this international program is to encourage the preservation of biodiversity and promote human health by educating policy-makers and the public about the dependency of human health on the health of other species and on the integrity of global ecosystems.

Healthy Ocean, Healthy Humans

The Center is developing the first exhibitry in the country linking our own health to that of the oceans. This project highlights the connections between marine ecosystems and human health and focuses on three aspects: Potential medical applications (Ocean Heals), seafood (Ocean Nourishes), and the ocean's role in providing a liveable atmosphere (Ocean Protects). It explores global warming and other issues that threaten these life support services, and culminates in a positive, solution-oriented presentation that convinces visitors to conserve the ocean environment in order to safeguard their own health.

Climate Change Futures

In collaboration with Swiss Re and UNDP this groundbreaking study investigates the health, ecology and economic scenarios for the future based on climate projections.

Healthy and Sustainable Food

The goal of this program is to increase public awareness about food choices that are healthy for humans and healthy for the environment.

Scientists and Evangelicals Initiative

This program is designed to develop relationships of trust and mutual respect and understanding between leading members of the scientific and evangelical communities so that we can begin to work together to protect the global environment.
