Healthy Ocean, Healthy Humans

The Healthy Ocean, Healthy Humans program aims to create educational materials that inspire marine conservation by demonstrating how human health depends on a healthy ocean environment. The program is based on our belief that by using the powerful, direct connection of human health people will be moved to think about the ocean not just as a vacation spot or mysterious underworld, but as part of the system that fosters human life. This is a collaborative program, working closely with advisors and partners across the nation.

The project currently consists of several components.

The Center has recently finished production of a 10-minute educational film with award winning filmmakers (Sea Studios Foundation) and animators (LAIKA/house and Funjacket Enterprises) titled Once Upon a Tide that reconnects its audience to the importance of the marine environment for all life on Earth, including human life.

Unlike conventional natural history documentaries, Once Upon a Tide is a fictional narrative that blends the moral and visual elements of a mystical fairy tale to inspire us to recognize the importance of ocean conservation. Narrated by Academy-Award winner Linda Hunt, this modern day fable is an innovative educational approach that will be shown in aquariums, museums, theaters and schools nationally and internationally. In addition, the Center is currently developing an extensive website with an educational section for teachers, educational “take-away” guides for viewers as well as hosting a series of community discussion events based on ocean and human health.

The official Premier of Once Upon a Tide will be held at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History on March 20, 2008 in the Baird Auditorium at 6:30PM. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion with scientists and filmmakers including: David Elisco, Vice President and Mark Shelly, President, Sea Studios Foundation; Kathleen Frith, Assistant Director, Center for Health and the Global Environment, Harvard Medical School; Paul Epstein, Associate Director, Center for Health and the Global Environment, Harvard Medical School; Nancy Knowlton, Sant Chair in Marine Science, National Museum of Natural History; and Carl Safina, President, Blue Ocean Institute. The Museum's Associate Director Elizabeth Duggal will give opening remarks. This event is free and open to the public.

For more information about this event contact Natalie Wicklund at 617 384 8530 or Natalie_Wicklund@hms.harvard.edu.

A Healthy Ocean exhibit was installed in The Ecotarium, The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, the Berkshire Museum as well as The Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.

Two new sets of the exhibit—one in English and one in Arabic—are also being displayed in the Middle East by the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden (PERSGA).

The Center will play a long-term partnership role in PERSGA’s new Sea and Human Health Initiative (SHHI).

The Center also produced a three-minute flash film “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Humans,” narrated by Academy-award winner Meryl Streep. (Flash plug-in required).

All of the Healthy Ocean, Healthy Humans projects explore three basic themes: The Ocean Heals, The Ocean Nourishes and The Ocean Sustains.

The Ocean Heals investigates medical applications derived from marine organisms and focuses on coral reefs. Newly discovered medial breakthroughs are coming from organisms in the reef environment, however these habitats are threatened due to warming, disease and pollution.

The Ocean Nourishes examines the role of seafood in the global diet from a nourishment perspective, as well as an economic perspective. Recent studies have revealed the cardio-protective value of omega-3s, and seafood is a staple for many developing nations. Over-fishing and contaminants such as mercury are now threatening this food supply and its health benefits.

The Ocean Sustains considers the ocean’s role in climate. The ocean helps shape our weather and provide the livable conditions our health depends upon. Now, temperature changes in the ocean environment are causing more extreme weather that carries health burdens including losses from droughts and floods.

Healthy Ocean, Healthy Humans is made possible with support from The Keith Campbell Foundation, Johnson & Johnson, the Curtis and Edith Munson Foundation, The Massachusetts Environmental Trust, the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, The Oak Foundation, The Ocean Foundation, The Ocean Fund of Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises, sand an additional anonymous foundation.
