The lecture will focus on the role of the media in covering climate issues, how it can be most effective and the challenges of keeping pace with the science of a changing environment. March 22, 2008 Once Upon a Tide was screened as part of the Washington, DC Environmental Film Festival at the Avalon Theatre, 5612 Connecticut Ave., NW. For more information about the screening click here.
March 20, 2008 The official Premier of Once Upon a Tide was held at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. The screening was followed by a panel discussion with scientists and filmmakers including: David Elisco, Vice President and Mark Shelly, President, Sea Studios Foundation; Kathleen Frith, Assistant Director, Center for Health and the Global Environment, Harvard Medical School; Paul Epstein, Associate Director, Center for Health and the Global Environment, Harvard Medical School; Nancy Knowlton, Sant Chair in Marine Science, National Museum of Natural History; and Carl Safina, President, Blue Ocean Institute. The Museum's Associate Director Elizabeth Duggal gave the opening remarks.

March 5, 2008 A preview of the Center’s recently produced educational film Once Upon a Tide was screened
at Boston’s Museum of Science. The screening was followed by a discussion with the film’s project director and Executive Producer Kathleen Frith and Project Scientific Advisor Molly Kile about how fictional and highly creative stories can be used to effectively communicate environmental issues, and the specific ways our health depends on the health of the environment. A sustainable seafood tasting, courtesy of Australis Barramundi was offered after the program.

The Center's 2008 Global Environmental Citizen Awards were presented to Kofi Annan and Alice Waters for their outstanding work towards protecting the global environment. The 2008 Coporate Council Award was also presented to the HeinzSeed Program during the evening's celebration for its leadership in international sustainable agriculture. Click here for more details. The Center’s annual retreat took place at the Glynwood Center in Cold Spring, New York, a beautiful conference facility located on a working farm. This year’s theme focused on things each of us can do to reduce our own environmental footprints. Steven J. Strong, Founder and President, Solar Design Associates presented his work on energy solutions and Bill Browning, Partner, Terrapin/ Bright Green LLC was joined by Center advisory board members Bob Fox and Bill Moomaw for a presentation on “Practical Energy Solutions for Individuals.”

The Muddy River: Boston's Environmental Film Series
This exciting three-day series will take place at the Coolidge Corner Theatre and will cover three environmental topics: Food, Climate Change, and Ocean.
Highlights include:
- A screening of King Corn followed by a Q&A with Boston-based filmmaker Ian Cheney and a reception featuring local and sustainable food and wine.
- A screening of Everything's Cool followed by a panel discussion with Adam Wolfensohn, Co-producer; Ross Gelbspan, Pulitzer Prize-winning author; and Beth Daley of the Boston Globe.
- The Sounds of Science, a special live performance by Yo La Tengo with the projected underwater films of Jean Painlevé. An introduction will be made by Fabien Cousteau of the Ocean Futures Society.

The Muddy River Film Series is presented by The Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School and the Coolidge Corner Theatre Foundation with Brookline GreenSpace Alliance, The Peabody Essex Museum and the Charles River Watershed Association. The Series is designed to use the powerful tool of cinema to foster discussion and engage the Boston community in environmental issues that are critical to our future well-being.

September 22-24, 2006 The "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Humans" trailer was screened at the Gray's Reef Ocean Film Festival in Savannah, Georgia.
September 15-17, 2006 The Center’s annual retreat for it’s faculty, staff, advisory board, and corporate council members took place at the Glynwood Center in Cold Spring, NY. This year, the theme of the retreat was “New Constituencies,” and discussions were led by Reverend Richard Cizik, head of the Washington D.C. office of the National Association of Evangelicals (which represents 30 million people in the U.S.) and Jerome Ringo, Chairman of the Board of the National Wildlife Federation and President of the Apollo Alliance, a coalition working with organized labor to promote energy efficiency, alternate energy sources, and jobs.
August 23, 2006Kathleen Frith, Assistant Director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment, presented an overview of the Center's recently completed study, Climate Change Futures: The Health, Ecological and Economic Dimensions, for the Harvard Club of San Francisco.
June, 2006Director Eric Chivian joined the Board of the newly formed E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation.
May, 2006Founder and Chariman of Interface, Inc. Ray Anderson joined the Center's Board.
April 18-19, 2006The Center held its eighth congressional course at the Cosmos Club in Washington, DC.
February 2, 2006 The Center's Human Health and Global Environmental Change Course begins.
December 7, 2005 All four of the Center's Corporate Council Members were recognized at the inaugural Low Carbon Leaders Awards. The Awards were supported by the Climate Group and presented at a ceremony during the COP11/MOP1 meeting in Montreal.
November 1, 2005 The Climate Change Futures report was released at an event held at the American Museum of Natural History, New York City.
October 21, 2005The Center's Global Environmental Citizen Award was presented to the Honorable Al Gore in New York City.
September 23-25, 2005 The Center’s annual retreat for it’s faculty, staff, advisory board, and corporate council members was held at the Glynwood Center in Cold Spring, NY. The theme of this year’s retreat was “Why Don’t People Get It? Overcoming Barriers to Understanding the Environmental Crisis.” Center guests Cornelia Dean, a science writer for the New York Times, and David Suzuki, Chair of the David Suzuki Foundation and an award winning scientist, environmentalist and Canadian television broadcaster gave presentations and led discussions on this theme.

July 4, 2005 The "Healthy Oceans, Healthy Humans" trailer was shown at the Alaska Sea Life Center in Seward, Alaska as part of the encore of the Alaska Oceans FIlm Festival.
June 9, 2005Director of Communications Kathleen Frith participated in a panel entitled “Oceans and Human Health: A Prescription for the Future” as part of Capitol Hill Ocean Week 2005. The panel was sponsored by Congressman Tom Allen (D-ME), Co-Chair of the House Oceans Caucus.
June 5, 2005Kathleen Frith presented the “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Humans” trailer she directed at the Green Screen Environmental Film Festival in San Francisco, a featured program of the United Nations World Environment Day 2005. The trailer premiered on the big screen at the historic Castro Theatre before David Attenborough’s film “Deep Blue.”
June 13, 2005Paul led a discussion entitled “Bugs in the Environment: Addressing the Ecological and Climatic Determinants of Infectious Disease” at the Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research and Medicine. The Roundtable was held by the Institute of the National Academies in Woods Hole, Massachusetts.
May 19-20, 2005Paul gave the closing lecture at The Arctic Resource Consortium of the United States (ARCUS) annual Arctic Forum in Washington D.C. This year’s theme was “Arctic Climate Change and Public Literacy: What is at Stake?”
May 11-12, 2005Paul participated in the first of a series of meetings of the Global Roundtable on Climate Change to be held over three years. The meeting took place at Columbia’s Earth Institute in New York City.
May 10, 2005Paul participated in the Institutional Investor Summit on Climate Risk held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City with members of Swiss Re. Other participants included Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, United Nations Foundation Chairman Ted Turner, and Former Vice President and Chairman of Generation Investment Management Al Gore.
April 22, 2005 Eric spoke at the Harvard School of Public Health as part of Earth Day 2005 sponsored by Harvard Medical School and the Harvard School of Public Health in partnership with the Harvard Green Campus Initiative. Read about the Earth Day event in the Harvard University Gazette.
March 31, 2005 Eric gave the keynote speech entitled “How Human Health Depends on Nature” at the World Bank as part of the Bank’s Environmentally and Socially Sustainable Development (EESD) Week.
March 11, 2005Paul participated in a panel for the Association of British Insurers 2005 conference, presenting information on the challenges of climate change for insurers and strategies for governments. He was joined on the panel by Sir David King, Chief Scientific Adviser to Her Majesty’s government, John Fitzpatrick of Swiss Re, and Steve Howard, CEO of The Climate Group.
February 11, 2005 Eric delivered a talk on Human Health and Biodiversity in New York City at Verdopolis, the first annual sustainability summit of its kind, hosted by Earth Pledge.
