The Center for Health and The Global Environment

Photo of the Center The Center for Health and the Global Environment was founded in 1996 at Harvard Medical School to expand environmental education at medical schools and to further investigate and promote awareness of the human health consequences of global environmental change. By focusing on health, the center is able to reach people in concrete, personal terms they can relate to and understand, and to make the strongest possilbe case that human beings are an intimate part of the environment and that we cannot damage it without damaging ourselves.

The Center is the only one of its kind at a medical school in the U.S. and is an “Official Collaborating Center” of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

The mission of the Center is to help people understand that our health, and that of our children, depends on the health of the environment, and that we must do everything we can to protect it.

To fulfill its mission, the Center organizes a number of programs for physicians, scientists, policymakers, the media, and the general public.

Classroom Education aims to deepen the understanding of the connections between the environment and human health for students at middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities by providing high quality information and teaching tools for educators across the nation.

Policymaker Education provides the best science available to policymakers by translating the abstract, technical language of global environmental change into concrete, personal terms of human health that Members of Congress and their staff can relate to and understand.

Biodiversity and Human Health has completed the most comprehensive scientific review of the connections between human health and biodiversity, which as been published in the book Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity, and is now engaged in a major educational outreach initiative.

Healthy Ocean, Healthy Humans aims to create educational materials that inspire people to protect the marine world by demonstrating how human health depends on a healthy ocean environment.

Scientists and Evangelicals Initiative is an effort that seeks to bring together leading environmental scientists and evangelical Christians to explore humanity's degredation of the global environment and to help lessen its impacts.
