Tina Grotzer, Ed.M., Ed.D.
Assistant Professor of Education
Harvard University

Tina Grotzer is an Assistant Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a Principal Investigator at Harvard Project Zero. She directs the Understandings of Consequence Project, funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). She is a cognitive scientist whose work considers how people reason about causal complexity and how patterns of causal reasoning interact with our understanding and actions in relation to science and the world. She is the lead author of Causal Patterns in Science, a curriculum series focused on engendering deep understanding in middle school science.  She is a Co-Principal Investigator on the EcoMUVEs Project, which aims to develop a multi-user virtual simulation to help students learn the complex causal concepts inherent in understanding and reasoning about ecosystems. Her work has also considered the kinds of default assumptions that people typically make when learning new complex scientific information and how to best frame scientific research for public understanding.

Tina's recent publications include an extensive review of the research on the development of complex causal understanding in Studies in Science Education and Learning to Reason about Evidence and Causal Explanations: Promising Directions in Education for the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her work is published in both academic journals and teacher-oriented publications and she is deeply committed to generating usable knowledge and translating research for classroom use. Her courses include, Research and Evidence: Framing Scientific Research for Public Understanding and Applying Cognitive Science Research Principles to Learning and Teaching. She collaborates with scientists from organizations such as the National Center for Atmospheric Research, Institute for Ecosystem Studies, and the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Tina is an educational advisor for a number of organizations that create a bridge between research and public use, including WGBH's Sustainability Project, PBSKids Next Generation Advisory Board, Wondertime Magazine, and the Coastal Studies for Girls Program. She has advised a number of children's television shows including PBS's It's a Big Big World, and Disney's Stanley, and PB&J Otter. Before coming to Harvard, she was a teacher for fourteen years. She holds her undergraduate degree from Vassar College and her master’s and doctorate from Harvard University.
